📚Provide training for staff
To avoid staff members displaying unfavorable behaviors which will deter LGBTQIA+ people from seeking services, train your staff to represent the values and ideals of your practice to create an affirming environment.
Engage LGBTQIA+ organizations to provide employee training at your organization on understanding common health issues that LGBTQIA+ people face, practicing inclusive language, and an understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities. Include all your staff members in your diversity training, even those at the front desk. Staff members should, after training, learn how to determine whether a possible referral site is LGBTQIA+ affirming.
Subscribe to journals, periodicals, articles, or mailing lists with information on upcoming training and workshops to keep staff informed and up to date on developments.
Malaysia is a Muslim majority society, many healthcare providers may not have the knowledge and language in addressing the intersection of the religious and SOGIESC identities. This toolkit by Muslim For Progressive Values provided many practical tips in addressing the intersections.
There are existing online free courses that helps healthcare provider in understanding and preparing how to be a LGBTQIA+ affirming healthcare provider. For example the following APTN's online course is a self-pace online free course to prepare you to be a trans affirming healthcare provider.
However, if you are interested about training or to seek support within Malaysia please contact seedeu@seedfoundation.com.my.
