🦸Create an affirming service environment for LGBTQIA+ people
A welcoming and accepting environment for LGBTQIA+ patients makes them feel safe and welcomed. This can include both physical and digital spaces. However, in the context of Malaysia, a risk assessment should be carried out to assess the level of safety for the organization. Sometimes, spaces that may appear LGBTQIA+ affirming could also deter ‘closeted’ LGBTQIA+ people from accessing the spaces, due to fear of association with LGBTQIA+ spaces. It is a fine line to tread and moderation is needed.
Place signs that make it known that the space and facilities are open to people of all genders. This includes bathrooms, consultation and examination rooms, and any other spaces that are open to patients.
Make available LGBTQIA+ affirming leaflets, information booklets, and publications in the reception area or on bookshelves.
Staff uniforms may include their pronouns on name tags, or other pins, stickers, or buttons that feature a rainbow flag or transgender flag.
Incorporate and publicize information about LGBTQIA+ persons on websites and social media, especially during important LGBTQIA+ awareness days and weeks.
Service delivery through online platforms is becoming more common post-Covid-19. Online services can be an alternative for LGBTQIA+ people who may not feel safe visiting your clinic or center or may not have access to transportation services. Having an online consultation as an option would be beneficial and affirming to the patient.
For online consultations:
Use a privacy-protected platform to ensure the safety and privacy of LGBTQIA+ patients.
Remember to always check in with the patient on their surroundings, if it is safe for them to have a consultation so that they can freely speak without fear.
Include LGBTQIA+ inclusive symbols (such as rainbows and pins) in the background (if possible). This can also apply when participating in other online engagements.
