🤝Provide necessary referral
Recognize the limitation of professional knowledge or training, or that of the organization, or that another professional or organization may better serve the patient’s needs. Maintain a list of LGBTQIA+ friendly healthcare providers, organizations and services to refer to patients to as needed. These services must be safe for LGBTQIA+ patients and their intersecting needs. The patient’s situation must be considered before making a referral. Would a referral delay care? Would it incur additional costs to the patient? Would the patient need to take time off from work which may be limited already? Therefore, referrals should only be made if necessary.
Tips to identify LGBTQIA+ friendly services:
Look at their website (if applicable) for a non-discrimination policy that covers SOGIESC.
Contact the referral site and ask if they have policies, guidelines, or required training for treating LGBTQIA+ people in an affirming way.
Look through patient reviews.
Routinely survey patients to get feedback on the external referral services.
