💖Responding to GBV cases

A survivor-centered lens is the hallmark of quality GBV response services. This toolkit recommends a survivor-centric approach to handling GBV cases involving LGBTQIA+ persons in Malaysia.

🧐What is a survivor-centred approach?

A survivor-centered approach focuses on the empowerment of survivors by creating a supportive environment for healing. It aims to put the rights of each survivor at the forefront of all actions, which ensures that they are treated with dignity and respect.

By doing so, this approach promotes their recovery, reduces the risk of further harm, and reinforces their agency and self-determination. Practicing a survivor-centered approach means establishing a relationship with the survivor that promotes their emotional and physical safety, builds trust, and helps them restore some control over their life.

Survivor-centered models of care also propose the integration of diverse sectors in prioritising the rights, needs, and wishes of survivors, such as physical and mental health, food and shelter, child protection, education, and so on.
